Blessed feast of All Saints
October 31,
2011
Oh how I adore the saints! For they
are not just saints; they are sinners, like me. Seekers. Fallen
people after the heart of God; which is what makes their presence in
this journey such a comfort.
In the song “On The Way”, my hope
was to lay out in the lyric what the journey of a saint looks like
(in the great hope that I will be one someday!). We are all just
travelers here; our time is short. We drift, we seek, we sometimes
find; we wander, fall, and then find our way again by the reach of
our loving God. We are terribly broken, awfully selfish, horribly
distracted, wonderfully forgiven. It’s miraculous, wholly.
The funny thing about a journey to
God is that it is never what anyone expects. My grandmother used to
say, “we make plans; and then God laughs.” My own journey has, for
the most part, been a series of making big plans only to have
themlovingly thwarted. And so the walk has been great mystery to me;
one that seems to be unwound for me and before me as I wander most
cluelessly. (Thankfully!) The sincerest moment in becoming a saint
is, I think, the moment you become truly willing to let go and say
“God, I have no clue what I am doing, obviously. Help. Lead me. Your
will be done.”
The mystery of God is the mystery
of us, too; who we really are in Him is never so much revealed as it
is constantly happening. We are all becoming, and will be until the
day we see Jesus face to face. I for one can not wait to give him a
big hug and say “whew….that was HARD! Thanks for helping me out”.
And for all you saints….let not
your heart be discouraged. Bless the burdens; accept the fallings;
embrace the beauty of your humanity and His divinity in it. You are
becoming. You are seeking. And you are loved.
